For example, ana historian might explore the topic of drug use by reading historical documents associated with the organization of the US Food and Drug Agency and the regulation of drugs in the US.

Differently, a cultural anthropologist would likely spend an extended period of time with drug users (or others involved in drug use, distribution, regulation, or prevention) and interview many people, seeking to understand what individual experiences can tell us about social perspectives on drugs and drug use.
