Exploring the Experiences of Mixed-Race and Multicultural Families in the United States
Objective: This assignment aims to encourage you to critically examine the experiences of families from multiple racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and to consider the unique challenges and opportunities that arise in these families.
Instructions:
Choose a mixed-race or multicultural family that you know or can interview. This could be your own family, a friend's family, or a family you know through your community.
Conduct an interview with one or more members of the family, exploring their experiences with race, ethnicity, and culture and how these factors have influenced their family dynamics. (Use the questions below to guide your interview).
Analyze the interview data and write a response, in at least 250 words, that addresses the following questions:
How do the family members navigate their multiple racial, ethnic, and cultural identities, and what challenges or opportunities arise from these identities?
How have the family members' experiences with race, ethnicity, and culture shaped their family dynamics and relationships with one another?
What strategies do the family members use to maintain and celebrate their diverse identities and cultures while also forging a shared sense of family identity?
Draw on course readings, lectures, and other relevant sources to support your analysis. Be sure to include specific examples from your interview data to illustrate your points.
Conclude your response by reflecting on what you learned from the assignment and how it relates to broader social issues and policy debates around race, ethnicity, immigration, and family.
