Your quest is to choose a work of art--or an artist--or a topic that is exemplified in a work of art--and then answer the following question:

How do the events of political, social, religious, and philosophical history affect your choice of human expression in the arts and letters?

Consider the following tips to focus your thoughts:

• Is there some universal truth or experience that is revealed or explored. Think: suffering, joy, freedom, dignity, hope, revenge, beauty etc.
• Set up the context for the art in your introduction. Write asss though your audience knows nothing about your topic.
• Are there other perspectives or works of art that you could consider in your research? Remember, comparing and contrasting automatically takes you into the realm of demonstrating critical thinking.

• Synthesis There must be a summative conclusion which shares your insights garnered in the process of studying your topic.
