Assigned Article: Adolescent Leisure Time in the United States: Partying, Sorts, and the American Experiment by Reed Larson and Sean Seepersad
Answer the following questions:
During high school, what were some of the typical leisure activities you engaged in on a regular basis? Classify them as either structured or unstructured activities and explain their categorization.
The typical leisure activities I regularly engaged in during high school were drawing, watching movies/television shows, and the ROTC drill team. Drawing would be classified as an unstructured leisure activity because adult supervision was neither needed nor productive. I drew as a seeking sensation as well as for coping because I did not have friends and was going through a lot of toxic family and family issues.
Watching movies/television shows would be classified as an unstructured leisure activity and was an entertainment value because I enjoyed the simplicity of movies or shows and how they helped me forget about worldly problems. Lastly, the ROTC drill team would be classified as a structured leisure activity because adult supervision was required, and this leisure would be categorized as identity formation because I wanted direction, discipline, and consistency.
- Explain how each of the three main philosophies outlined in the article would interpret your overall experience of leisure during high school. Do you agree with one of these philosophies more than another? Why?
- According to the article, how much free time is experienced by the typical American adolescent? Does this fit your personal experiences in high school? Why or why not? Explain.
- How do the authors define partying? What do they speculate could be some positive impacts of partying? They also state that an "environment that is dominated by positive feedback has the potential to encourage deviant behavior." What do the authors mean by this, and do you agree? Why or why not? For example, did you find this statement to be true based on your own personal experience?
- Why do the authors believe that organized youth activities may be better represented by the rational-instrumental point of view? How are high school sports similar yet different than activities such as partying?
- In what ways do some researchers speculate that participation in sports can impact the teen's development in a positive manner? In a negative manner? Based on your personal experiences, whether participating or viewing, do you agree or disagree with their statements? Is there anything else you see as a positive or negative developmental impact from being involved with sports?
