Assignment:
First choose a physical public location to explore. Examples include public library, medical office, workplace, school, or mall/stores. In the chosen space, look for both examples of heteronormativity or cisnormativity (e.g., generic stick figures on warning signs look the same as the generic figures designating men's bathrooms) and counter-examples (e.g., images that depict queer pairings). Then include the following:
- List your observations of heteronormative or cisnormative cues and queer-affirming cues.
- What surprised you?
- What did not surprise you?
- Did you see any connections to other systems of normativity (e.g., gender, racial, class, ability)?
- Identify at least two actions you could take to change the environment. Ideas may include: contacting administrators about creating and
- labeling accessible gender-neutral restrooms, ensuring that school posters are inclusive to a diverse representation of students, displaying queer-affirming symbols on classroom and office doors, training others at your workplace on these issues to continue discussions of dismantling heteronormative spaces.
