Linked-In has established a culture focused on the following characteristics: Transformation, Integrity, Collaboration, Humor, and Results. Its values-driven president seeks new hires who can help build the culture over time to create values-focused workforce. Linked-In values include the following: Members (customers) come first; Relationships matter; Be open, honest and constructive; Demand excellence; Take intelligent risks; Act like an owner. Managing compassionately is something important that every employee can do according to the CEO.
The HR Director is working diligently to establish a values-based selection process to turn the CEO goals into a reality for the organization. Accordingly, in the selection interview of applicants, the HR Director always includes a case scenario to which each applicant must provide a written response.
The case scenario describes a future time when the applicant has been hired as Director of Operations for the company. After stepping out of a meeting briefly, the Director of Operations (applicant) is approached by a manager who asks whether there is any way the Director can help one of their California employees whose newborn is in critical condition, hospitalized an hour from the employee's residence and office. Put yourself in the position of the applicant and explain what you would say and do, as well as why you would choose those words/action in such a situation.
Also include your thoughts regarding the following questions in your response:
1. What kinds of questions can recruiters/selection specialists ask to assess whether the applicant is a fit for the culture/values of the organization? Are there are other selection activities that could also assess culture fit?
2. How do selection practices in general impact an organization and its culture? Explain how/if an applicant might gauge the organization culture from the selection process.
3. Why do you think this particular interview case scenario was used in the selection interview? Is this type of case "fair" to the applicant?
