Assignment:
The Panama Canal project: Please recall Ferdinand de Lesseps wanted to build a sea-level canal (like the Suez). Later on, Theodor Roosevelt also wanted to build a similar sea-level canal and instructed chief engineer John Findley Wallace to do so. However, Wallace also faced many of the same problems that the French had faced (and probably would have ended in a similar disaster), until his successor John Frank Stevens managed to change the plans from a sea-level canal to a locks-and-dams system. What lessons did you take from this? Hint: as a project manager you may run a project that might be technically infeasible (or just very difficult, it is not always obvious at first.) How would you deal with it? How do recognize and avoid dead-end project paths? What would you do so you do not pursue your own version of a "sea-level canal" disaster?
What do you feel serves as primary challenges to security professionals in attempting to meet these needs and expectations?
