Assessment Brief

Objective of the assessment

The operations function of any enterprise has a direct and significant impact on the competitiveness and success of the firm. Upon completion of this project, you will have gained a deeper understanding of how the goals and objectives of an operation are created, deliver and realized in the way they do business. This assignment will draw upon the concepts, theories and models on operations management and how they are deployed in your chosen company.

You should select one specific area of operations management to focus on in your assignment. Areas you may wish to focus on may include planning and control, capacity management, supply chain management, quality management, or knowledge management. In researching the area you have selected, you should go beyond utilizing the lecture content and recommended readings, and should also engage in your own wider reading using peer- reviewed academic articles or books. You should have at least 10 reference sources and higher marks will go to the use of good quality operations and information systems journal references.

Selection of an organisation/firm
Select an organisation/firm that you can apply what you are learning on this course. This could be a service operation, such as a coffee shop, project and construction companies, other retail or distribution, transport or manufacturing operation. But it has to be one where you can identify the contribution of operations management in a specified area of operations management. Students commonly select the company they work for, or well-known firms upon which it is easy to access information on their operations (e.g Tesco, Amazon, Toyota, ZARA, Starbucks, McDonald's KFC).

Note: If you pick firms in a complex technology industry select a part of the industry not the whole supply chain otherwise your work will be too broad and lack analytical depth. For example, you might choose Apple, but only one part e.g. customer facing retail, manufacturing or supply chain, but not all!

Required in your report:
For your chosen organisation/firm, select an area of operations management that you assignment will focus on. This area of project management should be selected from the following: planning and control, capacity management, supply chain management, quality management, or knowledge management.

Essentially, you task is the address the following questions:

How does operation management in your organisation deliver on the strategy in your selected area of operations management?

What opportunities exist for implementing improvements in operations management in your chosen area of operations management in the organisation?

What are the challenges that will be faced and what barriers need to be overcome in implementing the improvements you suggested?

Report Specifications

An essential feature of the reports is to illustrate how theoretical constructs or models can help to explain the actions of organisations in practice. You are therefore advised to read widely. In fact, unless you have read and referenced at least 10 discrete references, it is unlikely that you have done sufficient reading. Beware of sources from the Internet: apart from reputable and academic references that can be downloaded through the Internet, most Internet references are not considered reliable for an academic piece of work. Currently, how do operations management deliver on firm objectives in the specific area of operations management you have selected.

What are the limitations in the current approach adopted by the firm and its operations management.

Outline a set of recommended changes you would make to improve processes in meeting firm objectives in your chosen area of operations.

Discuss the opportunities on offer.Outline the barriers and challenges that may be faced in the implementation of your recommendations.
