Case: Your elderly family member has developed a chronic (long-term and non-curable) medical condition and you are responsible for their care and you are considering long-term nursing home care. Your family member does not have the financial resources to pay for long-term nursing home care and you do not have any financial resources to help them pay medical expenses, so you need to find resources to help them. You need to understand the differences between Medicare and Medicaid, both of which are available to older adults under certain conditions, in order to figure out how to pay for your family member's medical costs
Part I: Medicare and Medicaid
Using on readings in your Wacker & Roberto text (see ch.11 & p. 396), the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) National Clearing House for Long Term Care Information the Medicare website, and any other resources you desire to use, discuss the differences between the Medicare and Medicaid federal health insurance programs in relation to the following:
1. Eligibility
2. Coverage
3. Dual Coverage
NOTE: Remember that based on the scenario neither you nor your elderly family member can afford to pay for nursing home care out of your own pockets. Make sure you answer the following questions in your Dual Coverage discussion: 1) Does Medicare cover long-term nursing home care? 2) Does Medicaid cover long-term nursing home care? 3) How do Medicare and Medicaid work together to help cover long-term nursing home care?
