Lab: Galileo's Simple Pendulum

Steps:

  • Determine the problem:  How do mass and length affect the period of a simple pendulum?
  • Make a hypothesis:  Make a prediction of how you expect each mass and length to change the period.
  • Test your hypothesis:
    1. Build a simple pendulum and record the results for each combination below.
    2. Test the results using the pendulum lab 2.03 simulation located at the PhET site: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/pendulum-lab/pendulum-lab_en.html
  • Analyze the data for each case:  What were the effects of mass and of length on the period?

  • Draw a conclusion:  Report the results from your analysis of the period.

  • Comment, in a final paragraph, on your experience with the experiment.  How was it?  What did you learn about the pendulum?  About yourself in the doing of a real experiment?
