An executive director of a NPO/NGO fulfills a role comparable to the chief executive officer (CEO) of a for-profit organization. NPOs tend to use the title of executive director to avoid the business connotation that the title of CEO usually evokes. Recent trends, however, indicate that NPOs and NGOs have begun to use the title of CEO/president more frequently within the nonprofit sector. The individual in this position often personifies the organization. He or she typically acts as the chief spokesperson for the organization and embodies the vision and mission of the NPO. In very small NPOs, the executive director/president/CEO may be the only paid employee in the organization.
