How do firms create competitive advantages? A firm may not be able to sustain value creation if it chooses a poor competitive position. It lies in the ability of the firm to serve its market with the same products and services that competition does, but at a lower cost. Porter (1996) describes strategic positioning as "based on customers' needs, customers' accessibility, or a variety of a company's products and services" (p. 66). The products and services a firm is able to produce are based on distinctive competencies and activities.
