T.S. Eliot's "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" has often been held up as the epitome of modern American poetry.

Eliot argued that "genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood" and that "The chief use of the 'meaning' of a poem, in the ordinary sense, may be to satisfy one habit of the reader, to keep his mind diverted and quiet, while the poem does its work upon him; much as the imaginary burglar is always provided with a bit of nice meat for the house-dog." In other words, don't try too hard to understand the words--let them work on you like music.

Poet Louise Gluck says that Eliot's poems are "beset by caution." His "sentences falter; major ideas are regularly subordinated, delayed, qualified" and that "his speakers either can't speak or can't be heard" (Proofs & Theories 22).
