Case Study:
Overview:
It's been said by many, including the ancient Greek philosophers, that one must first find self-love(Philautia) in order to love others. In some of the texts we have read, however, the selfless loveassociated with Agape, has led to the erasure of the person, leading us the question whether Agapeand Philautia can conflict, or whether one type of love leads naturally to the other. We can surmisethat social conditions often inform how Agape and Philautia are practiced, in this respect, or not. Thisis where Literary Theory and criticism may help provide a lens by which we can examine thisrelationship, and help us think about how the characters in the works we have studied negotiate this. For this final essay, you will incorporate seven sources (2-3 primary sources, which we have studied, and 4-5 articles of Literary Theory and Literary Criticism, which you will research through our librarydatabases).
