Reference no: EM132310952
Whilst on placement data is to be collected, analysed and presented as research evidence and an education pamphlet on research.
THIS IS A GROUP ASSESSMENT.
Instructions:
NB: You are required to adhere to and respect the patient's rights for privacy and confidentiality.
Failure to do so will result in an automatic NYC
You are not to collect any data from the client's history - ONLY from the client's Medication Chart.
Step 1 Quantitative Data -Spreadsheet
Data Collection -Data collection to occur whilst on clinical placement.
Select 5 - 10 patients (as a collective group; 1 each student) whilst on placement, maintaining rules of confidentiality, this is your sample population.
Write up a list of the medications these patients are having on a daily basis.
It is advisable to have 10 medications per patient (therefore you will need to select your patients with care).
Include in the list:
1. Trade name of each medication,
2. Generic name of each medication
3. Dosage,
4. Frequency, and
5. Route
6. Drug category,
7. Indications for use.
Use of the Medication Log sheet provided may help ensure you have all the relevant information, which you will need for the analysis process.
The Medication Log sheet is located under the Assessment Submission within Assessment Task 5.
Medication Log
Step 2 Quantitative Data -Discussion
Analysis
Decide what information may be gained, about the medications in use, in your unit/ward, from the data collected. Using a quantitative method, analyse the information.
Looking at all the sheets of information, try to identify a common theme (example - you may wish to organize the data into most frequently prescribed drugs or recurring drug doses).
Using this theme as a basis for analysis. This is done by transferring the relevant information into an excel spreadsheet - this is correlation of data.
When the data has been correlated to demonstrate your theme, you will need to apply a quantitative analysis process - example; what are the average times a specific drug (generic name) is prescribed as opposed to the number of drugs in total, in that drug category,
(example: paracetamol is prescribed 8/10 times in a list of 23 analgesics),(You may NOT use this example in your assessment).
Using this information write short paragraphs discussing the following:
(approximately 30 -100 words maximum on each of the issues below)
Describe the sample population.
Describe both the ethical and cultural considerations required for this specific population.
How did you decide on the correlation process?
o how did you analyse the data to produce results/conclusions,
A discussion of the data collection process,
o including limitations of this project/study and recommendations for future studies.
Your results/conclusion gained from the analysis process.
Produce an appropriate graph to demonstrate your conclusions.
Step 3 Qualitative Data
Data Collection
Select 3 patients from the sample population to interview regarding their understanding of the use of their medications.
Formulate a set of 4 questions (use a combination of open and closed-ended questions) to ascertain the patients understanding of their medication during the interview.
These questions are to be adhered to strictly with all 3 patients; the interview should last for no more than 10 minutes (take notes).
NB: You are required to adhere to and respect the patient's rights for privacy and confidentiality. You are not to collect any other data from the client- ONLY discuss your pre-set questions regarding the specific medication.
Ensure ethical and cultural considerations are strictly observed during this process.
Raw Data Collection
Record (in writing) information obtained - this is qualitative raw data
Raw data is to be included in the submission when the interviews are complete - please compile typed neatly presented notes with the question and the patients response (this will need to be a summary of the patients comments- not a transcript)
Qualitative Data Analysis
Using a qualitative method, analyse the information - as above look for a re-occurring theme and compile the data to reflect this.
Write short paragraphs (approximately 50 -100 words maximum, 1 - 2 paragraphs maximum per patient) on your conclusion of each of the patients understanding of their medication and the re-occurring theme noted in this.
Step 4 Research Flier
Produce a flyer which may be used to educate nurses about the information you have gained regarding your medication research within your unit/ward. Ensure you address the previous steps, using the paragraphs you have written in steps 2 and 4.
You may use the template provided on the student portal or produce your own. (The flier MUST be uploaded as a word Doc, therefore it is recommended that you use a flier [or try the newsletter] Templates found in Word [open a new document and there are many to from which to choose] You are permitted to produce two (2) A4 pages only.
The template can be located on the student portal under Learning Material, Resources. Headings have been provided - It is compulsory to use all these headings.
Step 5 Reflection
THIS IS AN INDIVIDUAL PROCESS (NOT PART OF THE GROUP PROCESS)
Using the ‘Gibbs model' write a reflection on the process of doing this assessment. Include your response to this experience, self-knowledge gained and a brief understanding of the benefits of research.
Minimum word count 100 words
