Choose two children from your early learning program whose skills you will document for this assignment.

Step 2

Select a domain on which to focus to gather information about the children's progress toward at least two goals. Note that this should be part of a larger process of ongoing assessment, so the information you gather for this exercise should only be considered a starting point.

Choose goals from the domain area based on your program's assessment tool. If your program does not use one, you can use the sample goals and levels of progress for children from birth to age 5 below:

Social-emotional development objective establishes and sustains positive relationships:

Forms relationships with adults
Demonstrates a secure attachment to one or more adults
Uses trusted adult as a secure base from which to explore the world
Manages separations without distress and engages with trusted adults
Engages with trusted adults as resources and to share ideas and mutual interests
Interacts with peers
Plays near other children; uses similar materials or actions
Uses successful strategies for entering groups
Initiates, joins in, and sustains positive interactions with a small group of two or three children
Interacts cooperatively in groups of four or five children

Note that these indicators are arranged in a continuum from least to most advanced skill levels. These sample objectives and indicators come from the assessment tool Teaching Strategies GOLD®.

Step 3

Plan times and approaches to gathering the data that align with effective ongoing assessment practices described in this session's information. You should have at least three data points for each child to have useful information to assess progress.

Step 4

Collect the information. If some documentation is physically large, such as children's work samples, or needed for children's portfolios, you can take photos of evidence.

Step 5

Give both children preliminary ratings for those skills on the assessment tool (or the sample goals).

Step 6

Reflect and describe the experience: Include the answers to these questions:

How did you choose what to collect and when to collect it?
What did you determine about children's skill levels, and how did you decide that?
What would you do differently next time?

Your answers should show evidence of knowledge of best practices for ongoing assessment as stated in session information and readings. Include summary information about the ages of the children; the domain, goals, and learning progressions; and assessment tool
