Option A

One of the most frequently heard words in literary studies is relevance. From writers to readers, from editors to teachers, we all like to think, whether we should or not, that the stuff of literature is the stuff of life. One of the key marks of literature--one of the fundamental distinguishing qualities of it-- is its ability not only to reveal, but also to reflect, "real life." That being said, then, for your essay I am interested in knowing how you think one of the stories or poems we have read does just that: how that particular work reveals, reflects, relates to (has relevance), in our world today. Choose only from the works assigned in this course. As you consider, be sure to think about all the ways that we can understand the world ...we can, for instance, understand the world globally, nationally, personally; historically, presently, prophetically; physically, emotionally, spiritually; politically, socially, economically.

Be sure, as well, that you emphasize the text in both your thinking and your writing: that is, you will want to use the work you choose as the foundation for your discussion and so should rely on plentiful quotations and paraphrase as you extend the text outside to the world-but don't rely only on quotations to the exclusion of your own critical thinking and writing. Be balanced and thoughtful.

Option B
Most teachers and scholars believe that literary analysis is the highest form of critical thinking-a skill that will serve one throughout life in all situations and careers. This skill may come naturally to some people, but most must work at acquiring it. The mother of a student of mine related that the most important thing her son said he had learned in my class was "learning to think." Therefore, what work or works in this course helped, inspired, or challenged you to think more deeply or in a different way than you have in the past. How did this work or works help you build your critical skills? Again, be specific in your response and use supporting evidence from the texts to support your thesis.

For either option:

Your essay should be a minimum of five well-developed paragraphs--though an essay of at least 2 ½ -3 pages or more is ideal.

Be sure to use the conventions of MLA style with regard to signal phrases and in-text citations for borrowed material. Use only the primary work and no outside sources. NO Works Cited is required for this assignment.

As before, be sure your thesis statement is strong and clear and shows not only your choice of topic but your purpose. Avoid plot summary.
