The goal is to demonstrate the dramatic changes that occurred in Japan after WWII and the Second Sino-Japanese War ended in 1945. Through the creation of two historically-based characters from two different generations, you will show how this shaped two different generations' often divergent perspectives and experiences.
Your story can begin any time after 1970 and anywhere in the world. Your two characters are reminiscing together about their lives in post-WWII Japan together. You can choose any historically plausible format. You can choose almost every aspect of your two Japanese characters, including their gender, name, education, and whether they are related or not.
The first and older character is someone who was at least 18 when the Second Sino-Japanese War began. This person saw the rise and fall of the Japanese empire.
The second and younger character is someone who was born in 1945 and grew up in a very different Japan.
After presenting each one's life story from 1945 to the 1960s (End of the war to post-occupation), allow each character to comment on the other's life. What did they learn from each other? Were they able to understand each other better? How and why?
Your assignment should read as one seamless and engaging historically plausible life stories that demonstrate your strong understanding of a wide range of relevant course material that is carefully cited.
Recommended Assignment Structure
(Each section consists of 1 to several well-organized and carefully cited paragraphs.)
Introduction Section: Introduce the setting (such as place, time, and context). Briefly introduce the characters, including how and whether they are related.
Section 2: Character 1's life in Post WWII Japan: How did this person find life right after the war? How did this person perceive the American Occupation? What was life like after the Occupation?
Section 3: Character 2's life in Post WWII Japan: Did the shadows of WWII and the lean Occupation years have any impact on this young person? What was like for this young person in an economically booming modern Japan?
Section 4: Character 1 comments on character 2's life. Points out differences and perhaps sources of conflict between the two generations.
Section 5: Character 2 does the same.
Section 6: Conclusion: Why did you create these two characters? What did you learn?
