Question: The 1963 New York Times #1 Best Seller for almost the entire year was the book The American Way of Death by Jessica Mitford, a British investigative journalist. Her underlying thesis in the book was that the American practice of embalming and viewing our dead was "macabre", "unnecessary" and a tool used by corrupt funeral directors to overcharge mourning families. "Morticians are merchants of a rather grubby order" and "I may not be able to change the world but I can at least embarrass the guilty" and "O death where is your sting? Where is your victory? Certainly the sting is in the pocketbook of the American public and the victory won by the funeral profession" are several paraphrased Mitford quotes which encompass her thought process in the book.
