An Anticipation Guide is a great classroom activity that can be used within any content area. It is a comprehension strategy used to spark background knowledge and build anticipation for new information. This strategy stimulates interest and motivates the student to activate close reading in order to engage with the material.
Complete the Anticipation Guide by completing the following steps.
Step 1. Complete the "Before Reading" section of the Anticipation Guide.
Step 2. Read Chapters 5 and 6 of the text and reflect on the statements in the Anticipation Guide.
Step 3. Complete the "After Reading" section of the Anticipation Guide.
Step 4. Submit your completed Anticipation Guide with a reflection paper, about 1 - 2 pages in length. As you reflect, be sure to address the following:
Describe ideas that either supported or did not support your original viewpoint.
Did your thinking change on any of the statements after reading the text? If so, which ones?
Did any of the statements surprise you? Why or why not?
How did this activity change the way you read the text?
Describe one way you could use this activity in the classroom to increase literacy achievement.
In what way could this activity motivate and engage students?
