How did the the practice of metaphysics (Topic 2) that began with the Greeks about 2500 years ago, largely culminating in Platonic or Aristotelean themes that carried forward until the 1600s, begin to be undermined via Descartes? What exactly did Descartes doubt that had largely been taken for granted for thousands of years?

In Topic 3 of our course we learn that Descartes' radical doubt steered philosophy more towards epistemology, even to the point that some philosophers became skeptical of doing metaphysics altogether.

We learn from our readings that Hume tosses metaphysics to the "flames" and Ayer strives for the "elimination of metaphysics." Justify whether these moves, and the failure of Ayer's verification principle, take philosophy in the right direction?
