Mollusks: The Survival Game (https://www.shapeoflife.org/video/molluscs-survival-game)

Watch the following video and complete the questions on snail feeding in place of exercise 9.1

1) Given that MOST mollusks have shells - why do so many ALSO invest in muscular feet?

2) What modifications to the foot structure do moon snails and cockles show? How do the two influence how the species interact?

3) What "miraculous" change gave nautili their new advantages? How did they accomplish this change?

4) How did the squid improve on the nautili body plan?

5) What trait does the video suggest to be most advantageous? Which species demonstrates it and what do we observe that indicates intelligence?

Observe the preserved chiton and answer/identify the following:

Class Polyplacophora

Katharina tunicate, the Black Katy chiton attaches to rocks in the middle and low intertidal zones where wave action is high. It can be from Alaska to Southern California, where it is now a protected species due to a history of overharvesting and death due to marine pollution. It can grow up to 12 cm in length.

1. Observe the dorsal and ventral side of the specimen.

2. On the dorsal side, identify the girdle (mantle) and eight overlapping plates/valves.

3. On the ventral side, identify the foot, girdle, gills, mouth (behind which is the radula), and anus.

4. What is the function of each structure from #2 and #3?

5. How do chitons feed? What other mollusk is this similar to?

6. List the major synapomorphies of the taxon Mollusca.
