Assignment: Doctrine of the Holy Spirit
A. Read "A Summary of the Examination of the New Testament Record of the Gift of Tongues" included at the conclusion of this packet. Considering J.L. Hayes's presentation of the gift of tongues and considering Dr. Cascieri's presentation of the gifts of the Spirit, discuss the gift of tongues. What is the gift of tongues? Is it available to today's Christian? If so, why do so many converts fail to receive it upon profession of faith in Christ? If not, how do you explain the gift as expressed in certain churches today? Using your own class notes and your Bible defend your answer with Scripture and sound biblical reasoning.
B. Based upon the lectures and the required reading in this course, how would you defend the Holy Spirit as a Person and co-equal member of the Trinity to cults such as the Jehovah's Witnesses who hold that the Spirit is only a force and not a person? Using your own class notes and your Bible defend your answer with Scripture.
C. Based upon the course lectures, how did the Spirit relate to Old Testament saints in Israel? How will he relate to saints during the Tribulation? During the Millennium? Do you agree with the professor's views on each of these eras? Why or why not? Defend your answer with Scripture.
D. The professor discussed six ministries of the Holy Spirit that happen instantaneously upon receiving Jesus Christ as Savior. Based upon the lecture and the textbook reading, what are these ministries? Can they be lost by an individual after receiving Christ as Savior? Discuss the filling of the Spirit in detail in relation to salvation and sanctification. Defend your answer with Scripture.
E. In your opinion, is the dispensational approach to understanding the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit as presented in this class the most biblically sound approach? If so, give examples of the Holy Spirit changing His role and work in specific dispensations. If not, which approach is? If not, do you see the role of the Holy Spirit changing over time? How do you explain this? Defend your answer with Scripture.
