Question: First responders in criminal justice are responsible for making ethical decisions to support justice-involved individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. Criminal justice professionals interact with a diverse population, including individuals who may have mental illness or disability diagnoses.
The situations often become the crux of a crisis intervention. Individuals can experience a mental health crisis due to many factors, including mental illness, disabilities, substance use, or other issues. Criminal justice first responders (law enforcement officers) must make ethical decisions when interacting with individuals in crisis.
By the time they arrive at an incident, they should know which strategies are more likely to lead to positive outcomes for vulnerable individuals who may become justice-involved as a result of a crisis. The de-escalation strategies, services, and administrative procedures used by criminal justice professionals to support each case will vary.
Select a mental health diagnosis or disability that may lead to a crisis intervention with the criminal justice system, such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, alcoholism or other addiction, Alzheimer's disease, autism, Down syndrome, or other intellectual disability. Familiarize yourself with the identifying behaviors and de-escalation strategies used in crisis intervention with individuals with this diagnosis.
Locate a recent news article on an event in your state that involved an individual with the mental illness or disability diagnosis you selected. This cannot be from personal experience. Share a link to or citation of the article you selected, and answer the following questions about the case: What was the diagnosis of the individual at the center of the crisis intervention?
Which behaviors might a criminal justice first responder observe in a similar crisis? How did the individual's symptoms affect the event? What was the outcome of the event? Which services or de-escalation strategies were used and to what extent were they successful? In your opinion: If the outcome was positive:
Which ethical decisions were made by the criminal justice professionals to protect the vulnerable individual in this case? If the outcome was negative: What would have been a more ethical way of handling this crisis intervention?
Support your response with at least 1 reference in APA format. This must be different than your article link. You must provide in text citations and a full reference at the end of your post to receive full points. Personal experiences cannot be used on the initial post.
