How did the formation of families help enslaved peoples cope with and resist the inhumanity of their situation? Mulatto slave children of planters could potentially inherit property from their White fathers. White owners were less willing to punish by whipping the fathers of slave families, thereby reducing paternal authority. The formation of families with children was the strongest statement slaves could make that they were people and not property. Most Southern Whites respected and revered families, even slave ones. The legal recognition of slave marriages meant that families were kept together, even if sold to a new owner.
