While steel had be known for centuries, making it in mass quantities eluded mankind until the 19th century. When technology finally made steel cheap and plentiful, the next task was to see what it could be used for. Andrew Carnegie, who would build his fortune in steel, demonstrated what steel could be used for when he had the Eads Bridge constructed in St. Louis. Check out the history of the Eads Bridge here:
