Case study

Alison works for a facility that provides emergency relief and disability support to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. She has recently been appointed to expand her role into advocacy and representation services for their service users. She has no experience in this role but with guidance from her manager, she begins to identify the scope of her role, the processes and conditions involved in providing representation services and advocacy.

Alison's manager provided her with information regarding the key elders in the community that she needs to consult with. She organises a meeting with them, listening and discussing the priority issues and needs of their community and asking how she and her facility can be of assistance. She also asked about how they want her to consult with other community groups and members and how do they want her to address their needs.

Alison then forms alliances with the other community service organisations and local service providers that are usually involved in catering to the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, including the local health centre and social housing. She finds out about the services and support they can offer, their experiences and concerns. She also asked about how she can assist in promoting their services to the facility's service users.

Alison meets with the local council office and consults with their community service staff to determine the support services they can offer and the processes involved to access these services.

Alison provided her manager with a report and summary of all consultations including issues identified, opportunities for further collaboration with community organisations, processes involved and what her responsibilities are to advocate for and represent their service users

Question 1. How did the consultations that Alison had with the individuals and key groups in the community contribute to her preparation for her new representation and advocacy role?

Question 2. How can developing alliances with community groups, service providers and local government offices contribute to more successful representation services for Alison?

Question 3. How did Alison follow the facility's process for reporting and documentation?
