Question: Gass & Seiter suggest that "our attitudes are interrelated" and "exist in associative networks" (p. 54). One strategy persuaders may use is associating their message (idea, product, etc.) with our favorable or unfavorable attitudes. Below are two short television advertisements. In the following questions, apply concepts and applications from the readings in developing your answer. Please note that the questions refer to a specific section in Gass and Seiter. You should develop your answers to indicate you understood that part of the reading. You may consult other sources as necessary but must ground your answers within Gass and Seiter's discussion.
I look for two components in your answers. Does your response to the question reflect that you read and understood the material? Does your response represent an intelligent analysis of the issues presented in each question? Because no two questions are the same, listing a minimum number of words is unreasonable. However, in most instances, the minimum expectation for each question is at least one to two paragraphs.
These advertisements were chosen for a reason--I hope you have not seen them before. Please use (1), (2), etc., to organize your answers.
Select one of the following advertisements:
(1) How did the advertisement attempt to persuade viewers using associations?
(2) What was the intent of the advertisement?
(3) Do you think the associations were intended to be "logical?" Why or why not?
