Your capstone project for this class will ask you to create a plausible solution to one small part of one of the social problems we have discussed/will discuss in class. You will be asked to prepare a 15-25 slide PPT presentation in which you address the following:
1) Size and Scope - Define what makes your selected a social problem an actual social problem as opposed to 'personal troubles.' This section needs to include data and information on the size and scope of the problem. You should address questions such as how many people are affected by the problem, are certain subgroups affected, and what is the overall cost/impact to society because of this problem.
2) History - How did your selected social problem come to be a problem in the first place? What policy decisions, factors, history helped create the conditions for this problem to exist? How long has the issue been a truly social problem and is it getting better or worse?
3) Past Solutions - What real world proposed solutions exist to alleviate your social problem? What kind of solutions to your problem are proposed in your text? What kind of public policy, non-profit, and other such solutions have been suggested or attempted? How successful have they been? Cite and describe at least THREE examples of solutions or proposals that have already been attempted somewhere in the world.
4) Your Solution - For the end of the paper, you get to make your final recommendation for a proposed solution in the form of a program, policy, law, etc. Remember, you are not attempting to alleviate the entire problem in one fell swoop, but something realistic - no magic bullets allowed here. So, if your broad problem is poverty, pick a solution that might reasonably address some root cause of the problem (e.g. wage laws, or better job training, or ....)
If you had the power/money to make any of the proposed programs/policies/laws you documented in section three (or a new program you design on your own), which would you select and why? What barrier keep your selected solution from becoming a reality? Alternatively, you may also come up with a new approach/solution of your own in this section.
Instructions:
To complete the assignment, you will need to construct a 15 - 25 slide presentation addressing all five of the key points above (e.g. scope of the problem keeping the following in mind. Even though we will NOT actually be presenting these in class, you will need to incorporate both the visual aspect of PowerPoint (PPT) slides with graphics, photos, etc. as well as the speaker notes below each slide to flesh out your presentation with the script of what you would be saying if you were actually giving the presentation in class. Remember, PPT slides are meant to be a VISUAL medium first and foremost. Putting all of your text in bullets on screen and then simply reading them to your audience is one of the cardinal sins of PPT design.
