One method of disseminating EBP project results (or research study or QI results) is through the use of a poster. Most professional nursing and other medical/scientific conferences offer poster sessions in addition to podium sessions. Poster sessions are designed to be impactful information sessions for the presentation of research or EBP information. Poster sessions are also often included as part of professional practice days in hospitals and other health care organizations. These events allow staff to share and disseminate information on projects completed in the institutional setting.

Participants are usually required to apply for participation by submitting an abstract (or summary) in advance of the event for peer review. The peer reviewers will examine the abstract and determine if the submission meets the event criteria and make a recommendation as to whether the participant should be invited to participate. Historically, poster sessions were held at in-person conferences; in recent years, however, many organizations have moved to electronic formats and forums that allow event attendees considerably more time to review and comment on posters. One of the key features of both in-person and electronic poster sessions is providing the audience with an opportunity to engage directly with the poster presenter.

As part of your NU 403 EBP project, you have the opportunity to design a scientific poster. Consider this an opportunity to gain more knowledge and skills that will be needed in your nurse residency program. It is essential to design a poster that is well-organized and visually pleasing in addition to including all of the required informational elements.

Refer to the materials posted below for directions, examples, and templates for putting together a scientific poster. While the same general rules apply for putting together a poster to disseminate information on EBP, research, and QI projects, the poster content areas will differ slightly. For EBP posters, common areas include the background/problem, PICOT statement, search strategies, presentation of reviewed literature, evidence-based recommendations, strategies to improve clinical practice based on recommendations, and references.
