Problem
Classification of people by race is one of the most important categories used in the United States. It is hard to believe this system did not really appear until after the settling of the Americas. Using what you read this week and other sources, please respond to the following questions.
A. If race-based classification of human populations is new, how did people classify one another in the past?
B. What is meant by the statement "racial categories are not natural, but constructed" (Golash-Boza, pp. 5), and what does that have to do with how and why we place people into groups based on race?
C. Our knowledge of America's Indigenous populations is limited, inadequate, deficient...Before the brief overview given in your text, give 1-2 examples of what you learned in the past about Native Americans.
D. During the era of scientific racism, how did our understanding of racial differences change? Do any of the ideas of scientific racism still exist? If yes, which idea(s), and how does that impact how people currently view race?
E. According to Golash-Boza, we always notice/wonder/ask people their race because this affects how we treat people and it affects our expectations of how they will behave. Do you find yourself wondering and/or asking people "What are you?" Do you think this impacts how you treat and/or think about people? Why or why not?
