Question: After the Civil War, the former slaves encountered many challenges. Making a living for themselves and their families was one of the greatest difficulties they faced. Sharecropping made it possible for the ex-slaves to engage in farming when they could not purchase land, and plantation owners were able to find the workers they needed. However, the freedmen often had very little money left when they finished paying the landowners their shares, and they had to pay for their supplies as well. The fact that there were few other employment opportunities in the postwar South made the situation even more difficult.

How did legal issues affect the economic situation for the freedmen during Reconstruction?
