Assignment:

With the Great Depression of the 1930s, unemployment skyrocketed. As they became unemployed and were blamed for the loss of white workers' jobs, Mexican workers and families became targets of a program called Repatriation, which meant sending them back to their country of origin. In reality, it was deportation - people were forced to leave the country where they lived. About 400,000 Mexicans were sent out of the country under Repatriation.

Many of these were children. The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce estimates that about 60% of these children were born in the United States and were U.S. citizens. Others had never been to Mexico in their lives, having been Hispanos who'd always lived on the land in Texas, California, and the other Southwestern states that once belonged to Mexico. How did the Great Depression affect Mexicans and Mexican Americans?
