Assignment:
In the lectures we covered for the third test--European Hegemony, Fin-de-siecle Europe, European Collapse, and Political Radicalism I (Fascism and Nazism)--we got to see how Europeans behaved when they found themselves in a position to dominate the globe, and it was far from pretty. At the beginning of the discussion on European Hegemony, we saw how race emerged as an idea in the west starting with the Enlightenment and how Europeans used racial theories that dehumanized people of color around the globe. They took these racial theories and combined them with the tools of the Industrial Revolution and the mentality of middle-class, classical liberalism to usher in European power around the globe. This process, however, set in motion a chain of events that contributed to the coming of the First World War and the emergence of Fascism and Nazism.
How did Europeans' attempts to dehumanize people around the world based upon a made-up hierarchy of race contribute to the broader crisis experienced by European powers during and after the First World War? In other words: How did Europeans' attempts to dehumanize people globally lead to their own dehumanization in relation to one another?
