Question: How did education change in the western half of the Old World web between 200 and 800 CE? The tradition of classical education and restless inquiry that developed in Athens in the 400s BCE remained the standard for formal education in both Christian Byzantium and the caliphates that neighbored them. By and large, education in Byzantium and the caliphates focused primarily on the long-standing traditions of philosophy, mathematics, and medicine. Learning became increasingly centered on religious study in both Christian and Islamic societies. As the Roman and Sassanian empires declined, so too did any interest in formal education until the Renaissance several centuries later.
