Assignment:
In this assignment, present your analysis of accessibility and potential universal design of a designated area in the Education and Behavioral Sciences Library (EBSL) at Penn State. You will record an approximately 10-minute but no more than 15-minute video in Zoom, and embed the recorded video in the assignment submission.
The analysis video presentation will need to include the following information:
ADA Compliance
- Discuss how the designated area is ADA compliant.
- Pick out 3-4 items in the area, and discuss how the space is not ADA compliant.
Use those non-compliance items to discuss what needs to be done to make the area fully ADA compliant.
Principles of Universal Design
- Discuss how the designated area uses the principles of universal design.
- Discuss what could be done to improve the area to follow the principles of universal design and make the space accessible to all people.
You will be provided the ADA Compliance Checklist that is appropriate to your designated area of the EBSL. The ADA checklist will serve as a guide to analyze how the area is and is not accessible. Be mindful that the ADA checklist provides very detailed measurements. You will receive some descriptions that include measurements; however, you are not expected to know all the detailed specific heights/widths, etc. of your space. You should use the ADA checklist as a guide to interpret the accessibility of provided images and floor plan. It will behoove you to familiarize themselves with the ADA checklist before beginning this project.
You are encouraged to think creatively in your analysis. You should think about your area from the perspective of a person with a disability, as well as people from all walks of life. What could be done to make the area more accessible to meet ADA standards, as well as beyond the standards to be a universally designed space?
