Case: You are working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and have just admitted Matthew, a 13-year-old Type 1 diabetic who lives with his grandmother. His labs are as follows:

Glucose 892 pH 6.9 CO2 4 HCO3 4 Hgb A1C 14

This is Matthew's 8th admission in 4 years for Diabetic Ketoacidosis. The grandmother states they have been following the insulin regimen ordered by the endocrinologist, but that Matthew is a growing teenage boy, and it is hard to monitor him. The diabetic educator says, "they are noncompliant and it is futile talking to them".

Question 1: How could you use the ethical decision-making model to educate the family about diabetic regimen compliance?
