Question: How could you promote a more inclusive environment for Matt? Please come up with three strategies of how you could promote inclusion for Matt and provide an explanation as to how each will help and why you would recommend the strategy.

Matt is a fifth-grade student with high-functioning autism. He is on grade level for all subject areas except reading comprehension. He will only give the facts when reading and struggles with giving his opinions about what he has read. During reading, he checks out and stares out the window or will play with objects in his desk.

Matt also struggles with background noises in the classroom; he gets very distracted by talking and the hum of the lights. Sometimes, the sounds get too much for him and he may start to rock back and forth in his chair.

Matt doesn't have a lot of friends in the classroom. He will often sit at lunch on his own and plays by himself at recess. Typically, at recess, Matt is seen walking around talking to himself using "TV" language. The kids think he's a little strange and just avoid him.
