Discussion Post: Statistics Population of Working Women

A student named Foofy conducted a survey. In her sample, 83% of mothers employed outside the home would rather be home raising children. She reported that "the statistical analyses prove that most working women would rather be at home."

What is the problem with this conclusion?

Using everything we've learned in the class so far, how could we fix her report to make it better?

Now that we are five weeks into the class, and you are on your way to become an educated statistician. You see or hear someone posting questionable data and statistics (like Foofy) or saying statistics is manipulated to say whatever you want. How would you defend it?

Respond thoughtfully and substantively to another person's post. What do you think about their claims - are they valid or invalid, what other reasoning can you think of that cause bad data and statistics?

The main problem with Foofy conclusion is that he is not informing his sample representative he has not defined the Population for example what types of jobs the ages the social economic status, it is also missing the sample size, what kind of questions did the survey ask and what options they were. he also overgeneralized the information

Even though some people cherry-pick or twist the data to fit their narrative, we should know how important it is to incorporate data from various sources and scrutinize the methods used to get it. Statistics depends on understanding its underlying principles, like sampling techniques and study design, so they can evaluate any data critically and analyze it the right way. The more openly we talk about methodologies, assumptions, and potential biases, the more credible conclusions you'll come up with.
