Case Study: Communication Challenge at Facebook Joel Kaplan, Facebook's vice president for global public policy, sat two rows behind his friend Judge Brett Kavanaugh, during the September 27, 2018, Congressional hearing in which the judge testified about sexual assault allegations. This hearing was to determine Judge Kavanaugh's suitability for a place on the Supreme Court. When television cameras showed Kavanaugh, Kaplan was visible in the background. Soon afterward, Facebook employees posted messages on the company's internal message boards expressing concerns. Some employees felt that Kaplan's presence ap- peared to be a show of support that appeared to be not only from Kaplan himself but also from Facebook. Their concern was that, as a top executive in the company, he represented the company when he sat in such a high-profile location during the hearing. Kaplan apologized to Facebook staff the day of the hearing, acknowledging the pain he created but also saying he believes one should stand by his or her friends. As employee concerns kept pouring in on the company's internal message forums, Andrew Bosworth, a vice president at Facebook, wrote to employees: "If you need to change teams, companies, or careers to make sure your day-to-day life matches your passions, we will be sad to see you go, but we will understand. We will support you with any path you choose. But it is your responsibility to choose a path, not that of the company you work for."42 Some employees, including Facebook's head of human resources, thought Bosworth's comment appeared to dismiss employee concerns. In response, Bosworth wrote a post on the company message board: "I spoke at a time when I should be listening and that was a big mistake. I'm grateful to employees who shared feedback and very sorry that my actions caused employees pain and frustration when what they needed to hear was better support and understanding from leadership." Facebook continued to deal with the aftermath of these events with town hall meetings that in- cluded CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg.
