Suzy has been an employee in the radiation oncology department at Magna Hospital for two years. She was a graduate of the hospital's radiation therapy program and had accepted a job in the department immediately after graduation. At the time of her employment, she was registry eligible. She failed the registry exam twice before passing on the third attempt. From the beginning Suzy had difficulty dealing with the responsibility of her position. Since Magna Hospital had a therapy school, the therapists were expected to work with and supervise students. This role was hard for Suzy. On the one hand, she wanted the students to like her, on the other hand, she enjoyed the power she had over them. This was not the only area in which she had difficulty. She could not stand to be behind in her work; however, she frequently wasted much time and effort running around, achieving nothing. Consequently, she made frequent errors in charting as well as in the patient setups. Suzy's attendance was poor. Often she was late for work or failed to come at all. Eventually, her coworkers came to expect that Suzy would not show up when scheduled on Mondays and Fridays. Suzy's coworkers were further annoyed when she took unscheduled time off when her dog had puppies. The general morale of the department began to decline. The Chief Medical Therapist was aware of the problems with Suzy. However, she did nothing about it. When students or staff complained about Suzy's poor work performance, the Chief Medical Therapist watched her for a couple of weeks but took no further action
