Students will write a personal reflection around one disability and advocacy and awareness. Through this assignment, students will address how to advocate and raise awareness for the chosen disability category at your local, state, and national levels.

Research

Select one disability as a focus. Review the course lesson content and readings to consider the specific challenges, needs, and rights associated with individuals experiencing this disability.

Conduct internet research to find existing organizations for their chosen disability category that exist in their local area, considering collaboration opportunities or resources provided.

You may want to research additional reputable sources, such as government websites, scholarly articles, and educational resources, to gather accurate and up-to-date information.

You will reference at least one reputable resource (for example, research journals, articles, or books), cite them using in-text citations, and list them on a reference page formatted according to APA guidelines.

Personal Reflection

Write a 2 to 3 page personal reflection and goal setting on advocacy and awareness. In this reflection you will address how you can advocate and raise awareness for the chosen disability category at your local, state, and national levels.

Note: Brainstorm specific strategies for each level of advocacy. Locally, think about different methods such as presentations, workshops, social media engagement, and collaboration with local support groups on a local level. On a state level, students should explore opportunities to engage with advocacy organizations, participate in policy discussions, and contribute to conferences or workshops. At the national level, consider possibilities of engaging with national organizations, attending conferences, and utilizing social media or personal platforms to create awareness content.
