Question: Jane Stall is a victim of aggravated robbery. The offender, Jeff Burger, has been to prison 3 times. He was released just 4 months prior on a 2-year burglary sentence.

In Jane's case, Burger held her up a gunpoint, just after the sun went down, as she was walking home from an evening church service. Burger took her purse, watch, and necklace, for a total economic loss of $300. He did use her credit cards to the amount of $1,500. Although the gun was empty, he did point it at Jane and pulled the trigger, laughed, and ran off. Jane has been mentally traumatized, since the incident.

The police responded, took a description of the events, the suspect, and the items taken. Burger was caught in the several days later, after he committed the same crime against an elderly lady. The police never did inform Jane of Burger's arrest. He quickly accepted a plea deal, was sentenced to 5 years in prison, and shipped off to serve his sentence, all within one month of his arrest. Jane found this out after calling the police who directed her to the prosecutor's office. The secretary told her after taking 10 minutes to find the file. Jane was in tears and abruptly ended the call.
