MGMT9710 Business Management and Organizational Behaviour

Research Essay Assignment

Thesis Statements:

1. Workforce Diversity:
• Organizations are becoming increasingly cosmopolitan, diverse and international. Managers must learn to respect and embrace this change. Diversity, if managed positively, enhances creativity and innovation in organizations, as well as ensures better decision-making by providing different perspectives on problems. When not managed, diversity leads to increased turnover, heightened inter-personal conflict and more strained communication.

2. Changed Employee Expectations and Values:
• Traditional benefits and packages such as job security, attractive pay, housing, and others do not attract, motivate and retain today's workforce. Employees demand empowerment and expect equality of status with management. Empowerment results in redefining jobs, and perhaps even with new structures of management. Expectations of equality break up the traditional relationship between employer and employee.

3. Improving Productivity and Quality:
• As organizations are exposed to competition, managers are seriously thinking of improving quality and productivity. In this context, managers are implementing programs like TQM (Total Quality Management) and in doing so, re-engineer programs to include more employee involvement in achieving customer satisfaction and creating value for the customer. TQM is broad in its application, and may include small edits to the service process, or more radical re-inventions.

4. Artificial Intelligence and Reducing Bias:
• Bias, especially in recruitment and promotion, is seen as increasingly problematic for companies. It can be very damaging to an internal culture, and conflicts in this space are easily bridged towards unethical concerns of nepotism, racism, sexism, and more. In order to reduce bias and increase diversity, companies are turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) within HR activities. Within this exciting new field, one can do case studies of implementation in individual companies, analysis of specific technologies, or meta-studies examining the existing literature in the field.

5. Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility:
• One trending topic in organizational behaviour is how corporate ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) can help attract and retain (even improve the morale of) talent. Another related topic is the use of the behavioral concept of "the nudge" to create more ethical behaviour, fairer treatment of a diverse workforce, or environmentally responsible practices, and other current and global initiative.
