ASSIGNMENT:

Watch the TedTalk by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris: How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime. Dr. Burke Harris is a pediatrician who uses the ACEs inventory to consider ways to address the health issues of her patients. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) do not go away once someone turns 18, often the impact of trauma, if untreated, can impact the psychological, social, and academic success of emerging adults. Understanding the role as a student development professional in being a trauma-informed professional is one way that we can effectively help emerging adults find the resources they need to address any past trauma that may be impacting their lives.

After watching the TedTalk, reflect on the questions and write some of an initial responses to share with our group: Regarding psychosocial issues that emerging adults face, how would someone with more ACE's or less be impacted in navigating college life? This may be in relationships, academics, engaging in extracurricular activities, health, etc... What are the resiliency factors that can help college students overcome trauma? There is tremendous hope for individuals who have experienced trauma to overcome, lead great lives, and be healthy, so what student development programming can make this happen?
