Question: Need a response to this discussion answer to a classmate. "Glutamate is the most abundant free amino acid in the brain and is at the crossroad between multiple metabolic pathways." ( Danbolt & Zhou, 2014) Glutamate is an amino acid that can be found in foods containing protein, such as cheese, milk, mushrooms, etc. Glutamate in combined with how cells are programmed will determine how glutamate will be a transmitter in the brain. If in any case that glutamate is increased, it will begin the process of exciting the nerves and will lead to their death and the process is known as "excitotoxicity". Opposite to increase glutamate, with a glutamate deficiency it can cause some symptoms such as insomnia, issues with concentration and mental exhaustion. There are some studies that suggest that taking certain vitamins such as vitamin C can help lower/stabilize glutamate if needed. These issues can cause a large interruption in an individual's day to day life.
