I have worked in both low and high socio-economic status (SES) school districts and have noticed a marked difference between teaching children, especially those at the extreme ends. While most teachers I talk to would like to believe there are no differences and that we can teach all children the same, children from low SES families often struggle to have even their basic needs met and this does have an influence on learning and development. Reflect on the learning resources this week and discuss the following questions:

  • How does being poor, middle-class, or rich affect your viewpoints towards young children?
  • What are the challenges of working with children of various socio-economic statuses?
  • How can you support children from lower SES homes? From higher SES homes?
