Question: Shouldn't we trust ourselves to be able to read literature and then criticize it? Isn't Richard a person who didn't read Conrad? Doesn't "Garland's traveler inherit an exhausted narrative, and it is one he hasn't even read? His head, full of movie dialogue, television scripts, comic book heroes, and video games, is adrift in a world where travel is just one more virtual experience." In addition, how can we better understand Allie Fox/Richard if we don't understand Marlow? How can we understand Sal and Daffy Duck if we don't understand Kurtz? If Achebe wants Conrad gone, don't we end up creating a generation of travelers/"parasites" who have forgotten about empires and kingdoms, colonies and wars, racist policy and ideology (much of it through western religion)? Don't we reinforce the problem if we forget?
