Problem: Plato's two dialogues, Apology and Crito, depict the trial of Socrates and its aftermath. In Apology, Socrates seems to suggest that the pursuit of justice may bring one in conflict with the law, in which case, one should choose the life of virtue even if it means failing to obey the law. In Crito, however, Socrates claims that the laws themselves confer a duty of obedience on all citizens which cannot be justly violated. Is Socrates contradicting himself between these two texts, or is he being consistent? If he is contradicting himself, why do you think Plato represents him this way? If he is being consistent, how can we reconcile his justification for disobedience in the one text with his call for obedience in the other?
