Assignment:
Using the templates and guidelines provided in Chapters 1-11 of They Say/I Say, for your second essay you will respond to two or three of the essays in the text. You can agree, disagree, or both (pages 8-10), but you must interact with your chosen essays in an academic manner as described in chapters 1-11.
• First, choose a topic that interests you from the following list:
o Is College the Best Option?
o Are we in a Race against the Machine?
o What There to Eat?
o How Can We Bridge the Differences that Divide Us?
o What's Gender got to do with it?
• Second, read at least three articles from the textbook on your chosen topic.
• Third, make sure you fully understand the articles you've chosen. Look over Section one (chapters 1-3) to help you with summarizing and quoting.
• Fourth, check out the credibility of your authors. We'll work on this on in class.
• Next, think about how you want to respond to the articles. Consider Section Two (especially chapters 4-5) for examples of ways to respond and templates with which to craft your own response.
• Finally, draft an effective essay that cites at least two of the articles and expresses your own thoughtful stance. Your final essay should include at least two direct quotes and two other paraphrased or summarized nods to your source material.
On the rough draft week, post a draft that's been revised at least once, carefully. The further along you are in the process, the more your classmates and I can help you.
Be creative, thoughtful, and use precise words.
